Is it fine to appear so many romantic LGBTQ-themed online novels?

In recent years, novels, comics, and TV dramas with LGBT themes have shown explosive growth all over the world, such as POSE, an American drama television series, Cherry Magic, Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!, a TV series adapted from comics in Japan, I Told Sunset About You, a Thailand romantic drama coming-of-age television series. All these have received wide attention in the corresponding market.

As far as novels are concerned, the theme of LGBT not only appears in serious literature but also enters the public’s field of vision in the form of popular online novels.

At present, the mainstream content of LGBT in the market includes not only the cognitive process of LGBT people to their personal identity, the acceptance and understanding of their identity by their parents and friends, and the conflicts between their own social and cultural background and personal identity, but also fanfictions, romantic novels, fantasy novels, suspense novels and so on.

With the rapid development of LGBT-themed online novels, the discussion related to it is becoming more and more intense on the Internet.

Some people think that the serious infidelity of this kind of novel is not conducive to the spread of LGBT culture. Most of the authors of these novels are not LGBT people, or researchers of such groups, which makes them unfamiliar with LGBT culture or the identity dilemma faced by LGBT groups at present. Therefore, there is a serious problem of inaccuracy in this kind of novel. People are just looking for romantic novels dressed in LGBT topics. What is more, they think that this kind of novel will mislead the public’s cognition of LGBT people and let people ignore the real problems that LGBT people are facing.

There are also some people who are optimistic about the existence of this kind of online novels. They believe that when the identity of LGBT generally enters the field of popular novels, the sense of alienation among LGBT people will be gradually eliminated, that is, the love and hatred of LGBT people are not much different from that of the “common” folks. At the same time, they also support that the protagonist setting of LGBT appears not only in romantic novels, but also in fantasy novels, suspense novels, and other categories of novels, making sexual orientation a setting rather than a major issue in the novel. Only in this way can more people get used to the existence of LGBT people.

Of course, it does not mean that online novels should stop discussing the dilemma of LGBT identity. Romantic LGBT novels make people accept the existence of LGBT, while more serious LGBT novels will make people understand the identity dilemma of this group. Only in this way can LGBT culture really enter the public’s field of vision.

That’s all I wanna talk about today. And next week, I will recommend a booklist of GoodNovel LGBT-themed online novels, including the romantic type and a little serious type.
