How to make your characters rich and vivid?

• Avoid listing out all features all at once!

You don’t have to describe all the features of your characters directly. Instead, portray them as the story develops. Before writing a story, it’s good that you have the appearance, personality and background of the characters in your mind. But you don’t want to just pour them out all to your readers! They can be better revealed in the story.

For example, rather than writing down he is a tall handsome guy, it’s better to start from a different angle like when I look up, I cannot stop looking at his big blue eyes ; Instead of saying he is a smart guy, it’s better to use a story like he solves a difficult task to show his intelligence.

Remember your characters are alive! They live in your story! Write the story, not the characters.

• Build your characters based on real life!

Arts are from life but higher than life. This does not mean that we should build characters not existing in our real life. You don’t want your audience to feel strange about your story. Your audience will feel more related if your characters can make them think of someone they know in real life.

After you create a character based on this rule, give them a strong personality or find one spotlight to focus on to let them stuck in your audience head!

• Be logical!

Many might make a mistake that there is no need for logics when writing novels. Novels are fictious, not real stories, however, it still needs to MAKE SENSE! Give the twist of the sotry when it’s time to instead of giving the twist and turn whenever you want to.

For example, we don’t want to just say a guy has been bearing up all the critics about himself and one day he sets off all his anger all of a sudden. It makes more sense if we say that he finally sets off his anger when one day someone slanders his families too!

• Create characters with high EQ and IQ!

There is time when we read a story, we feel so angry about the characters, thinking “what an idiot!”. We don’t want to have a character easy to fool around. It will be a lot more exciting when the main character wins over or beats someone really smart than interacting with someone numb.
